Situated about 50 kilometres from Madrid in between  Miraflores de la Sierra and Manzanares el Real,  Soto is a medium sized town with over 8,000 inhabitants. Part of Soto sits in the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares, a protected area full of walks and cycle rides.  Behind Soto is the impressive "Cuerda Larga" and the mountain "La Pedriza"  with plenty of climbs and some of the most serious mountain walks in the area. Soto is one of the few places in the Sierra where there is an indoor swiming pool Soto is a lively place with plenty of good bars and restaurants, it is let down a little by the lack of accommodation choices, with really only one hotel in the town.  That said it is another good place to base yourself to explore the northern part of the Sierra de Guadarrama.  As Soto is a little more on the flat than neighbouring towns like Miraflores it has more places to cycle catering a little better for those of us who are not hyper fit mountain bike junkies Fiestas in Soto de Real Like a lot of places in the Sierra de Guadarrama, Soto celebrates San Isidro on the 15 of May.  In addition to this they also celebrate on the 7th of October  the day of the Virgen of the Rosary and on the 13 of June San Antonio.  The main fiestas however, are in August on the first weekend of the month in honour of Virgen del Rosario
