Sierra de Guadarrama
Welcome to the
Sierra de
Guadarrama, this site
is dedicated to
bringing you the
best of the region
and helping you to
discover its secrets.
This site is written
and maintained by
people who live in
and love the area
(warts and all).
The Sierra de Guadarrama is the
Mountain range north of Madrid covering
some 80 kilometres; it is literally an area of outstanding
natural beauty only about 40 kilometres north of one of
Europe's capital cities (even closer from Barajas the
airport).
The peaks of the Guadarrama range average around
2.000m. The highest peak, Peñalara, reaches an altitude
of 2.438m. The range is ideally suited to all levels of
ability, offering easy, well marked trails with limited
ascents to much harder treks requiring high levels of skill
and fitness. For about 4 or 5 months of the year they are
snow capped and the region even boasts a ski resort at
Navacerrada. In the summer the area is the main retreat
for Madrilleños to escape from the oppressive heat of
Madrid.
This site is split into 4 main sections
1)
A description of the main towns and villages
2)
The best places to eat, drink and be merry
3)
Things to do, mainly outdoor activities
4)
If you need accommodation where to stay
Additionally we will try to bring you any interesting local
news and details about what's on in the area that you
might enjoy.
One would think that lying so close to a major European
capital, the mountains would be flooded with visitors every
weekend however this is far from true. Most visitors stick
to a small number of areas and the majority do not
wander much further than the picnic areas.
Your Help
This web site is designed to show what is available in the
Sierra de Guadarrama and help the visitor regardless if
they are here for a long stay or a weekend break. So if
you have any ideas about what we should cover, anything
we may have missed, places we should review or
interesting local news and events, then please let us know.
Equally we love to receive articles and photographs about
our Sierra so feel free to forward them on and who knows
we will publish the best (see contact us; add link).
We are also trying to build up a collection of good
photographs. If you like any of them please feel free to
use them all we ask is that it is for non-commercial use
and that if you do publish them somewhere we would love
a link back to ourselves.
Last of all
Please check back regularly The Sierra de Guadarrama has
many beautiful towns and villages, 000’s of walks and
many fine restaurants and bars. To document them all will
take sometime, so this website will continue to grow as we
discover more about this stunning area and add more and
more places to this site.
we hope this you find this site useful and we welcome any
feedback but most importantly come and enjoy the sierra.
